I can so relate to this one. We are getting married down there Oct 5, 2007 we have told the family- mainly due to the idea that in order to attend some of them will need to start saving and the whole idea of needing to apply for passports- the problem with letting it be known so soon was that there is only so much you can do this far in advance.

In retrospect I wish I would have held out a couple of more weeks because after the first week of Nov. you can at least give them an idea of cost of flights- if you need a referral for a coordinator down there let me know- FH and I have been working on this for months...
Feel free to PM if you need any insight or just to chat.

Good luck and Congrats!

I sent my "save the dates" out in July. My wedding is in February 2008. Give your guests about 6-7 months in advance to hear about the travel options, etc.

We're giving our guests a full year to save and plan. We're doing wedding "announcements" just saying 2009, then save the date cards will go out April 2008. Our invitations will follow in October '08, We'll have informal postcards sent out every two months up to spring of '09 to keep it on everyone's mindst in November for our April 2009 wedding.

This way they have a full year to plan, save, obtain passports and make arrangements with their employers. Sounds like a lot, but I'm just thinking of what kind of notice I would want someone to give us for something like this.
