Destination Barbados

If you are planning a wedding on the beautiful island of Barbados and would love to experience the colourful culture of the local people then here are some of the best days out.

Bajan, Roots & Rhythms

This exciting dinner and stage show at the Plantation theatre, offers a real insight into West Indian culture. You can enjoy the steel pans while eating from a grand Bajan buffet. To follow, a spectacular dance show with fire-eaters, stiltmen and a flaming limbo. To end the night you can listen to the sounds of the Caribbean performed by the Plantation Band.

Harrison Caves

One of the most popular show caves in Barbados is situated in St. Thomas. Visitors board an underground tram and are taken on a tour of the rediscovered living caves. You will be amazed by the endless lakes, streams and waterfalls that are enclosed in the cave’s passages and “The Great Hall” a cavern which is an astonishing 100ft high.

Tours are run from 8.30am to 4.00pm everyday of the week which leaves plenty of time to discover the surrounding Welchman Hall Gully and its beautiful scenery.

Pelican Village

This shopping village is located on the outskirts of the capital city Bridgetown. The shops offer the handcrafted work of local craftsmen and you are sure to find lovely mementos of your honeymoon here. Pottery, rum cakes, straw mats and unique metal art are among the items for sale in the shops. The village is not far from a harbour and the walkways are decorated with tropical flowers. If you visit the village on a Wednesday during cruise season you can enjoy the “Pelican Dooflicky” a Barbadian music and dance show.

Crop Over

This five week summer festival is a must see if you are visiting Barbados. It is the most popular event on the island and celebrates the harvest of sugar cane. It begins with the crowning of king and queen of the festival, traditionally the most prolific sugar cane cutters. You can wonder through Bridgetown Market with its array of arts and crafts stalls and enjoy local food and beverages while listening to live calypso music. One of the biggest shows of the festival is the “Cohobblopot” which displays the most colourful and elaborate festival costumes and showcases local calypso bands. The Grand Finale is the Grand Kadooment where troupes compete for prizes in costumes, music and display of themes.
